Review: Emancipation of the Grotesque

By Shannon on Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

When I first moved to New York, I went to The Antagonist Movement’s Hawks and Doves group exhibit. I remember there was art everywhere, a fashion show, readings in the back room, DJs and three different bands playing. It was exactly what I wanted New York to be. Last nights party was not like that. For one thing, the show is much smaller, limited only to the upstairs of Niagara. But, Sylvia Ortiz, who curated the exhibit, has thrown together a nice colection of some interesting pieces (a piece by her is pictured).

They range from the beautiful to the absurd to the boring, but overall a it’s a show worth checking out.
The party itself was also pretty calm and quiet, which is unusual for The Antagonists, but I blame that on poor word-of-mouth. One of the members of the group told me himself that he didn’t even know about the show til the night before.
The party was over by midnight, but everyone who was there got to enjoy some good art, good music, good drinks and good conversation.

Emancipation
Emancipation of the Grotesque will be hanging at Niagara (7th St and Ave A) for the next month.
